CLINICAL EXPLANATION

What is mentoplasty?

Mentoplasty is a minor surgery designed to augment and project the structure of a recessed or weak chin using a solid medical implant.

Our philosophy prioritizes three-dimensional anatomical harmonization. We do not seek to simply enlarge the chin, but to balance the facial contour in conjunction with the nose and neck angle. We avoid placing disproportionate implants—which cause a harsh or cartoonish appearance—and select anatomically contoured implants that adapt to the native jaw, securing them safely to prevent displacement.

The goal is to achieve a chin that provides strength, balance, and a well-structured profile line, respecting the innate symmetry of your features.

What it improves

  • Frontal and lateral projection of a weak chin
  • Visual definition of the jawline (profile)
  • Balance of proportions with the forehead and nose

What it does not change

  • Your bite or teeth alignment (occlusion)
  • Severe vertical height of your jawbone
  • Muscle laxity in the neck (platysmaplasty)
AUGMENTATION OPTIONS

What does the plan include?

Chin augmentation with an implant is planned to maximize scar concealment:

Intraoral Approach

Concealed internal incision

A small 1.5 cm incision is made inside the mouth in the lower gum. The implant is placed directly on the bony structure, leaving no external scars on the facial skin.

Solid Implant

Cohesive silicone contouring

Selection of a solid, medical-grade anatomical implant according to the shape, width, and degree of projection required to balance the proportions of the chin.

Intraoral Closure

Absorbable sutures

Closure of the internal oral incision using fine, absorbable sutures that dissolve spontaneously after a few days of recovery.

* If the patient also presents excess fat under the chin (double chin), a neck liposuction is performed concurrently during the same surgery.

It could be for you if...

  • You have a recessed or weak chin (mild micrognathia or a recessed profile).
  • Your nose appears very large or projected due to the lack of lower chin projection.
  • You have a normal bite and occlusion without severe functional jaw abnormalities.
  • You are in good general health and have optimal oral hygiene.

Consider alternatives if...

  • You have severe dental malocclusion or skeletal bite problems, requiring orthodontic treatments or complex orthognathic surgery.
  • You seek temporary chin augmentation without surgery; in this case, contouring can be performed using in-office injectable fillers.
  • You have an active gum infection or teeth in poor condition, requiring dental healing before placing the implant.
DIAGNOSTIC PHASE

How we define your plan

An individualized clinical evaluation is essential. We assess your profile projection, lower jawbone structure, and lip symmetry to design a safe implant placement.

“We aim to balance the proportions of the chin. We evaluate the three-dimensional profile to determine the ideal implant size.”
Profile Analysis (Profilometry)

We study the ideal proportions between the forehead, the base of the nose, and the patient's chin.

Dental Hygiene Assessment

We confirm there are no active dental caries or infections before placing the intraoral implant.

Size and Shape Selection

We choose a contoured implant that softens the transition with the lateral jawline.

OPERATING ROOM

The procedure, explained simply

IncisionsConcealed Intraoral

A small incision inside the lower lip, externally invisible. It heals quickly and leaves no marks.

FixationSecure to the bone

The implant is seated directly on the periosteum of the lower jawbone, preventing displacement.

AnesthesiaLocal / Sedation

It is comfortably performed under local anesthesia, with the option of light sedation depending on the case.

StayOutpatient

Outpatient procedure; you return to your recovery home immediately after completion.

PREOPERATIVE

Preparing for your surgery

Since the incisions are made inside the oral cavity, strict oral hygiene and dental health are essential to prevent implant infections.

01
Oral Hygiene & Dental CleaningTeeth and gums free of plaque and tartar. A professional dental cleaning is recommended prior to the procedure.
02
Medication SuspensionAvoid blood thinners, aspirin, and over-the-counter supplements for the weeks indicated prior to surgery.
03
Antiseptic Rinses beforehandBegin special antiseptic mouthwashes prescribed days before your surgery.
POSTOPERATIVE

Recovery Timeline

Mentoplasty recovery is very manageable. The main discomforts are initial swelling and hygiene restrictions when eating.

Days 1 to 3 — Care and cold soft diet

Stage of peak swelling in the chin and lower lip. You must follow a cold, soft diet, performing rigorous mouth rinses after eating any food.

Days 5 to 7 — Removal of external tape

The external support tape that helps shape and contain chin swelling is removed. You can transition to warm foods of a soft consistency.

Week 2 — Normal return to work

Swelling decreases significantly. Patients typically return to their work activities. The internal absorbable sutures fall out on their own during this period.

Months 1 to 3 — Defined jawline contour

Residual swelling of the lower lip and chin completely subsides, showing the final projected profile in a stable and natural way.

ETHICAL COMMITMENT

Surgical safety and realistic expectations

Like all facial aesthetic surgeries, mentoplasty requires ethical clinical judgment. During the medical consultation, we review your jawbone structure, dental occlusion, and gum health to reduce risks and confirm if surgery is appropriate for you.

An individualized clinical evaluation defines the anatomical feasibility of your chin augmentation.

Local swellingIt is normal to experience temporary swelling in the chin and lower lip during the first few weeks.
Temporary numbnessSensitivity in the lower lip may slightly decrease temporarily, recovering spontaneously.
Strict oral hygieneThe internal oral incision requires rigorous cleaning and rinses to prevent bacterial infections around the implant.
Anatomical fixationThe solid implant is secured onto the bone to prevent accidental displacement during speaking or chewing.

FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY

Cost of Mentoplasty: What Determines the Budget

The cost of chin augmentation with an implant should not be defined generically or without a prior medical evaluation. Each surgical quote is individualized and corresponds to the specifics of your case.

During your clinical evaluation consultation, Dr. Uriel Muñoz will assess your anatomy and define a customized surgical plan. The final cost of the procedure is determined based on the following factors:

  • Type and size of the selected solid implant.
  • Whether it is combined with other facial procedures (e.g., rhinoplasty or double chin liposuction).
  • Operating room fees in a safe hospital-based surgical facility.
  • Fees for the medical team and postoperative follow-up consultations.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Mentoplasty

Solid medical-grade silicone (or high-density polyethylene) implants are used. These materials are completely inert, biocompatible, and have a firm consistency similar to bone. There is no risk of leakage, and they are permanently tolerated by the body.
No, Dr. Uriel Muñoz's technique of choice is the intraoral approach. A small 1.5 cm incision is made inside the mouth (in the lower gingivolabial sulcus), placing the implant directly over the bone. Therefore, there are no visible external scars on the facial skin.
A profiloplasty is the planned combination of mentoplasty and rhinoplasty in the same surgical procedure. Frequently, a patient with a prominent nose also has a recessed or weak chin (micrognathia). Correcting both elements in a single surgery dramatically balances the proportions of the facial profile.
No. Chin augmentation with an implant is a purely aesthetic procedure that alters the external projection of the soft and bony tissues of the chin. If you have severe dental malocclusion or functional jaw alignment issues, a prior maxillofacial surgery or orthodontic evaluation will be required.
Solid chin implants are designed to be definitive and permanent. Unlike breast implants, they do not require periodic replacement over the years unless the patient wishes to remove it or change its size for personal preference.
