CLINICAL OVERVIEW

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a major surgical procedure that safely removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin from the breasts.

Our philosophy prioritizes anatomical proportion and functional relief. Gigantomastia or macromastia is not just a cosmetic concern; it is a medical condition that leads to chronic spine pain, deep shoulder grooving from bra straps, and skin irritation in the inframammary fold. We evaluate the exact amount of tissue to be removed to ensure the new volume is compatible with your frame while preserving the viability of the nipple-areola complex.

We aim to shape a lighter, more elevated, and firmer bust, dramatically improving your quality of life and freedom of movement.

What changes

  • Significant reduction in breast volume and weight
  • Relief from chronic shoulder, neck, and back pain
  • Nipple elevation to a natural anatomical position

What stays the same

  • Total absence of scars (an inverted-T scar is required)
  • Volume stability in response to future hormonal fluctuations
  • Skin elasticity against normal aging processes
SURGICAL PLAN

What is typically included?

Breast reduction addresses multiple tissue layers to comprehensively reshape the breast:

Glandular Resection

Tissue & Fat Removal

Precise removal of excess dense glandular tissue and deep breast fat to reduce the physical weight on your chest and spine.

Repositional Lift

Nipple-Areola Elevation

Lifting the nipple-areola complex to its new, aesthetic position using dermo-glandular pedicles that preserve vascular blood flow and sensation.

Skin Reduction

Anchor-Shaped Closure

Removal of stretched, loose skin at the lower base of the breast, closing the borders with fine sutures to shape a conical and compact breast.

* In patients with high fat content, lateral axillary liposuction may be combined to refine the contour from the breast to the back.

You may be a good candidate if...

  • You suffer from chronic back, shoulder, or neck pain caused by the weight of your breasts.
  • You have painful grooves or deep shoulder indentations from the pressure of bra straps.
  • You experience persistent skin irritation or rashes in the inframammary fold due to friction.
  • You have difficulty engaging in physical activities or finding well-fitting, proportional clothing.

You should consider evaluating alternatives if...

  • You plan future pregnancies in the short term, as the breasts may fluctuate in size and experience dramatic hormonal changes.
  • You have an unstable body weight or are in the process of planning a massive weight loss.
  • You smoke actively, vape, or have poorly controlled diabetes or autoimmune conditions.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS

How we define your plan

A personalized clinical consultation is essential. During this evaluation, we analyze the estimated weight of your breasts, shoulder symmetry, and glandular tissue health to design a safe reduction plan.

"We aim to achieve a bust size that is proportionate to your height. We plan a balanced resection that relieves physical weight without abruptly altering your body contour."
Clavicular and Sternal Distance Measurement

We precisely measure the distance from the sternal notch to the nipple to plan the final lifted position.

Glandular Density Assessment

We review a pre-operative mammogram to assess the ratio of fatty to glandular tissue, tailoring the target resection volume.

Body Proportion Calculation

We select the target cup size (e.g., cup B or C) in harmony with your chest circumference, height, and hip width.

THE OPERATING ROOM

The procedure, explained simply

IncisionsInverted-T (Anchor)

A circular line around the areola, a vertical line downward, and a horizontal line along the breast crease, all easily hidden by a bra.

ResectionTissue & Fat

Direct removal of the excess dense breast tissue under strict hemostatic control to minimize bleeding.

AnesthesiaGeneral Anesthesia

Performed under general anesthesia, closely and continuously monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

Hospital StayOvernight Stay

Usually requires spending the first night in the hospital for close monitoring of fluids and initial pain management.

PRE-OPERATIVE STAGE

Preparing for your surgery

Responsible preparation is essential to optimize surgical safety and facilitate a smooth, comfortable postoperative recovery.

01
Lab Work & MammogramComplete blood counts, coagulation tests, an electrocardiogram (EKG), and a rigorous pre-operative mammogram.
02
Quit Smoking & VapingStop smoking and vaping completely at least 4 to 6 weeks before surgery, as nicotine compromises skin oxygenation and increases the risk of nipple tissue necrosis.
03
Compression GarmentAcquire the recommended medical-grade post-surgical support bra to bring to the hospital on the day of the procedure.
POST-OPERATIVE RECOVERY

Recovery Timeline

Recovery from breast reduction requires relative rest and meticulous wound care to prevent tension on the lower suture lines.

Days 1 to 3 — Drain Removal & Initial Follow-up

We remove the surgical dressings and drains at your first follow-up visit. You must begin wearing the special underwire-free compression bra.

Days 10 to 14 — Gradual Suture Removal

We evaluate your healing progress and remove external sutures at the office. Swelling begins to gradually subside.

Week 3 — Return to Office Work

Most patients can return to sedentary desk jobs. You must avoid heavy lifting or straining your upper body for 4 to 6 weeks.

Months 3 to 12 — Scar Maturation & Final Shape

The breasts settle into a natural shape and soft texture. The inverted-T scars flatten and fade significantly with the help of silicone sheets and massage.

ETHICAL COMMITMENT

Surgical Safety & Realistic Expectations

Like all major surgery, breast reduction requires an ethical clinical assessment. During your medical consultation, we evaluate your glandular density, breast symmetry, and medical history to reduce risks and confirm if the surgery is suitable for you.

A personalized clinical evaluation determines the anatomical feasibility of your breast reduction.

Inverted-T ScarsRemoving large volumes of skin and tissue makes periareolar, vertical, and horizontal scars unavoidable.
Risks of SmokingNicotine severely compromises the blood supply to the nipple-areola complex. Smoking is strictly prohibited.
BreastfeedingDepending on the volume of glandular tissue removed, the capacity to breastfeed in the future may be reduced.
Nipple SensationTemporary numbness in the nipple is common and usually resolves gradually within a few months.

Cost of Breast Reduction: What Determines the Budget

The cost of a breast reduction surgery should not be defined generically without a prior medical evaluation. Every surgical budget is individualized to the specific details of your case.

During your clinical consultation, Dr. Uriel Muñoz will assess your anatomy and define a tailored surgical plan. The final cost of the procedure is determined based on the following factors:

  • The degree of gigantomastia and the volume of glandular tissue to be removed.
  • Whether lateral liposuction is combined to refine the underarm and side-breast contour.
  • Operating room fees and medical supplies at a certified hospital.
  • Surgical team fees and all postoperative follow-up consultations.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Breast Reduction

Yes, it is the primary functional benefit. Removing excess glandular and fatty tissue from the breasts significantly reduces the physical strain on the cervical spine, shoulders, and upper back, noticeably improving your posture and making it easier to exercise without discomfort.
Due to the need to remove fat, glandular tissue, and rearrange excess skin, the technique of choice usually requires an inverted-T or anchor scar. This includes a fine, circular line around the areola, a vertical line down to the lower fold, and a horizontal line along the inframammary fold.
Future breastfeeding capacity may be reduced depending on the surgical technique used and the volume of breast tissue removed. Modern techniques that preserve the connection of the nipple to its supporting glandular pedicle aim to protect the milk ducts, but the risk of reduced milk production is real.
There is no fixed amount. The volume to be removed is planned individually according to your height, shoulder width, and physical build. It can range from about 300 grams per breast to more than 1 kg in cases of severe gigantomastia.
Initial recovery requires 10 to 14 days of moderate rest before returning to light or office work. You will need to wear a supportive postoperative bra continuously for the first month and avoid intense physical exertion, running, or lifting your arms abruptly for 4 to 6 weeks.
