Gluteal Augmentation Procedure in Puerto Vallarta - Dr. Uriel Muñoz
CLINICAL OVERVIEW

What is gluteal augmentation with implants?

Intramuscular gluteal augmentation is a high-precision body contouring procedure that provides long-lasting volume and definition to the upper quadrants of the buttocks.

Our medical philosophy prioritizes a deep and secure intramuscular placement. By inserting the implant within the fibers of the gluteus maximus muscle, it remains completely covered by your own tissues. This minimizes the risk of implant visibility (visible edges) or sagging due to gravity, ensuring a firm, athletic, and natural contour.

This technique is the gold standard for thin patients who do not have sufficient body fat deposits for a fat graft (BBL), ensuring stable, long-term volume.

What it changes

  • Stable projection and volume in the upper pole of the buttocks
  • A more balanced silhouette and curved contours from the side profile
  • Firm consistency and an athletic, natural feel to the touch

What it does not change

  • Cellulite or extreme skin laxity in the lower gluteal area
  • Volume in the lateral hips (hip dips) directly
  • Complete absence of scars (permanent intergluteal scar)
PRECISE METHODS

What does the plan usually include?

High-definition gluteal augmentation is planned with strict anatomical precision:

Cohesive Implants

Medical-Grade Implants

Selection of durable silicone elastomer gluteal implants filled with highly cohesive gel, designed to withstand daily activity.

Intramuscular Pocket

XYZ Intramuscular Technique

Precise anatomical pocket creation within the muscle fibers to ensure optimal tissue coverage from all angles.

Hidden Scar

Intergluteal Incision

Surgical approach performed exclusively within the vertical intergluteal crease to avoid visible scarring.

You may be a candidate if...

  • You are a patient of a thin build and do not have sufficient body fat for a fat transfer (BBL).
  • You have flat, deflated buttocks or a noticeable loss of projection due to aging.
  • You want a long-term, stable increase in volume that does not reabsorb over time.
  • You are willing to strictly follow recovery protocols, including sleeping face down and using a special cushion.

It is advisable to evaluate alternatives if...

  • You have localized fat deposits and prefer a comprehensive three-dimensional shaping with your own fat (BBL).
  • You cannot interrupt office activities or long trips requiring sitting during the first 3 weeks after surgery.
  • You present very severe gluteal ptosis (sagging) that requires a surgical lift (excision gluteoplasty) beforehand.
DIAGNOSTIC PHASE

How we define your plan

An individualized clinical evaluation is essential. We analyze the volume and symmetry of your buttocks, the thickness of the gluteus maximus muscle to safely accommodate the implant, and determine the ideal size and type of implant for your body shape.

Muscle Measurement and Thickness

We assess the thickness and strength of your gluteal muscle to ensure it will optimally cover the implant.

Implant Size Selection

We select the precise volume in cubic centimeters (cc) and projection (oval or round shape) that harmonizes with your hips and thighs.

Gluteal Asymmetry Analysis

We analyze height or volume differences between the buttocks to plan a corrective, symmetrical placement.

OPERATING ROOM

The procedure, explained in simple terms

IncisionsIntergluteal Crease

A 5-6 cm vertical incision in the crease between the buttocks, completely hidden.

PocketIntramuscular Plane

Creation of the space within the gluteus maximus muscle, protecting the sciatic nerve.

PlacementSymmetrical Implant

Symmetrical insertion of the cohesive gel implant on both sides.

Stay1-Night Hospitalization

Performed under general anesthesia. Requires a 1-night hospital stay for initial pain control.

PRE-OPERATIVE

Preparing for your surgery

Responsible preparation is essential to optimize surgical safety and facilitate a smooth, comfortable postoperative recovery.

01
Comprehensive Laboratory TestsBasic blood tests, coagulation times, and a baseline electrocardiogram.
02
Skin Hygiene and PreparationWashing the gluteal and perianal area with the indicated antiseptic soap.
03
Acquire Support Cushion & GarmentHave the special thigh cushion and compression garment ready as directed.
POSTOPERATIVE RECOVERY

Recovery Timeline

Resting on your stomach or side is essential during the first two weeks to protect the intergluteal incision and prevent implant displacement.

Days 1 to 7 — Sleeping strictly face down

You must sleep on your stomach or side. Do not sit under any circumstances. Limit movement to slow walking. Exercise extreme care with personal hygiene.

Day 14 — Suture removal

Dr. Uriel Muñoz removes the sutures at the office. You may begin sitting gradually using a special cushion under your thighs.

Weeks 3 to 4 — Return to sedentary work

Return to office work and short drives, always using the special cushion. Light walking on flat surfaces.

Week 8 — Clearance for strenuous exercise

Gradual return to exercise, including strength training, squats, and sports. Intramuscular injections in the buttocks are permanently prohibited to avoid accidentally puncturing the implant.

ETHICAL COMMITMENT

Surgical safety and realistic expectations

Like any surgery involving medical implants, gluteal augmentation requires an ethical clinical analysis. During your consultation, we assess tissue thickness and your daily activities to minimize potential risks.

Intergluteal ScarThe intergluteal incision requires strict hygiene after bowel movements to prevent bacterial contamination.
No IM InjectionsIntramuscular injections in the buttocks are strictly prohibited for life to prevent accidental puncture.
Contracture RiskThere is a small risk of long-term capsular contracture, requiring periodic monitoring.
Sleeping Face DownYou must sleep strictly face down for 2 full weeks. Compliance with this rule is vital.

FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY

Buttock implant cost: What determines the budget?

The cost of buttock implants cannot be defined generally without a prior medical evaluation. Each surgical budget is individualized to your specific case.

During your consultation, Dr. Uriel Muñoz will assess your anatomy and define a tailored surgical plan. The final cost is determined based on the following factors:

  • Brand and volume of the silicone implants (cc).
  • Combination with flank liposuction to contour the gluteal area.
  • Operating room fees and hospital stay duration.
  • Surgical team fees and follow-up consultations.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about buttock implants

Modern implants are placed in an intramuscular position (within the gluteus maximus muscle) or subfascial. Since they are covered by a thick muscle layer, they are imperceptible to sight and touch, providing a completely natural appearance. When sitting, your body weight rests on the ischial bones (pelvic bones) and lower fatty tissue, not on the implant, so there is no risk of pressure or discomfort.
The incision is made in the intergluteal cleft (the natural crease between both buttocks). As it heals in this hidden area, the scar becomes virtually invisible, remaining completely concealed even when wearing swimsuits or small underwear.
Fat transfer augmentation (BBL) requires that the patient has sufficient donor fat deposits in the abdomen or back to be extracted via liposuction. Implant augmentation is the ideal solution for thin patients who do not have enough body fat or who seek long-lasting projection and volume that does not depend on fat reabsorption.
During the first 2 weeks, you must sleep strictly on your stomach (prone) or on your side. You should not sit directly on your buttocks, except for using the restroom. When you start sitting from the third week onwards, a special cushion is placed under the thighs to avoid direct pressure on the implanted area.
Highly cohesive medical-grade silicone gel buttock implants are designed to be extremely durable and resistant. They do not have an obligatory expiration date, but regular long-term follow-ups and imaging checks are recommended to ensure they remain in perfect condition.
